Planning Your Visit

Before You Arrive

The museum is open Saturday to Thursday, 09:00–16:00. Last admission is at 15:00. We recommend allowing at least 2–3 hours for a full visit. Hours may change during national holidays — check our website before visiting.
The museum is located on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, approximately 2 km north of the Giza Pyramids. You can reach us by taxi or rideshare (Uber/Careem, ~30 min from central Cairo), tour bus from major hotels, or private car with free parking on site.
Yes. Complimentary parking is available for all visitors, with ample space for private cars, taxis, and tour coaches. Accessible parking bays are located directly in front of the main entrance.
Yes. Public guided tours run daily at 10:00, 12:00, and 14:00. These are included with Premium tickets, or can be added to any ticket for an additional fee. Private guided tours for individuals or groups can be arranged in advance through our website.
The GEM has multiple food and beverage options, including a café on the ground floor and a restaurant with views of the Pyramids. The museum shop is also located near the main exit. Outside food is not permitted in the exhibition galleries.
We recommend a minimum of 3 hours for a highlights visit, and a full day if you want to explore all galleries in depth. The Tutankhamun galleries alone typically take 60–90 minutes. Consider a two-day visit for the complete experience.
The Collection

Artefacts & Exhibitions

The Grand Egyptian Museum's permanent collection contains over 100,000 artefacts, making it the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian objects. Not all objects are on display at any one time — the full collection spans predynastic Egypt through the Graeco-Roman period.
The Golden Death Mask of Tutankhamun is displayed in the dedicated Tutankhamun Gallery on the second floor. It is the centrepiece of the world's first complete display of all objects from Tutankhamun's tomb. Signage throughout the museum guides visitors to this gallery.
Yes. The GEM has several dedicated temporary exhibition spaces on the ground floor. These host rotating exhibitions on specific themes, periods, or internationally loaned collections. Check our News & Events page for current and upcoming shows.
Yes — the GEM Conservation Centre has viewing windows that allow visitors to observe conservators at work. The centre is one of the world's largest museum conservation facilities, housing over 50,000 objects undergoing treatment. It is accessible with a standard museum ticket.
Yes. The Narmer Palette — one of the world's oldest historical documents, dating to c. 3100 BCE — is displayed in the Early Dynastic Period gallery. It depicts the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt and is considered one of the most important objects in human history.
Accessibility

Access for All Visitors

Yes. Every part of the museum — including all exhibition floors, the conservation viewing area, cafés, and restrooms — is fully wheelchair accessible. Elevators connect all floors. Complimentary wheelchairs are available at the main entrance on a first-come basis.
Yes. Audio guides with extended audio descriptions are available for visually impaired visitors in 10 languages. The devices are induction loop compatible. Selected galleries also feature tactile replica objects that visitors may touch. Ask at the welcome desk.
Guided tours in Egyptian Sign Language are available and must be booked in advance. Please contact our Education team at [email protected] at least one week before your intended visit to arrange.
The museum operates designated quiet morning sessions on the first Sunday of each month, from 09:00 to 11:00. During these sessions, audio announcements are minimised, lighting is adjusted in key galleries, and staff are briefed to support visitors with sensory needs. Booking in advance is recommended.
